TV Show Taping this Thursday with Lacie Madison! - August 27, 2008

Good afternoon!

I apologize in advance for the short notice but this is a special event that I was just invited to perform at.

Ever want to see a TV taping? Here is your chance. I will be doing a taped interview and performance for Nashville’s local channel 15 during the Patricio International Variety Show.

Thursday, August 28, 2008
5:30pm - 8:00pm
Nashville State Technical Community College
120 White Bridge Pike
Nashville, TN 37209
(directions are at the bottom of the e-mail)

It is a local half hour variety show and they need an audience. They are taping 2 shows, taping starts at 6-6:15ish, on the first show will be Jonny Counterfeit. Very funny comedian I have heard him and he is great.

Then after the first show (aka a short half hour later) is someone from Gibson guitars and then myself.

I’ll do a seven minute interview, then 1 song and the curtain will drop.

Just sending the word out and would love to see you if you are open this Thursday.

Thanks and rock on!

Lacie Madison
www.laciemadison.com
*Parking and finding the studio is very odd*

From I 40W take exit to White Bridge Pike south. The FIRST Nashville State Technical Community College entrance on the left you turn onto (coming from West end onto White Bridge North you take the LAST entrance on the right) and go way down the road past some construction and there is a big lot on the right. Park there and then you start walking back the way you came. Once you reach the first collage building (I think it is an auditorium of some sort) make a left following the sidewalk and go up some concrete steps and first building on the left it is called the “PAM” building. The siats to the entrance are set below ground.

Any questions don't hesitate to send me an e-mail for more information.

Thanks once again!

Behind the song- Only Looking Out For You - April 28, 2008

I had bought a new ‘Teach yourself guitar book’ and promptly forgotten about it when a few weeks later I came across it my music book collection. I was antsy for something new to play so I flipped through it and found a song I was supposed to know (yet didn’t- that happens quite often to me with DIY music books I find.) that had an interesting chord progression- C-AM-DM-G or 1, 6-, 2-, 5 to you Nashville number fans.

Started strumming it out and if it is possible to fall in love with a chord progression, I was a goner. Music book again forgotten I started playing a melodic yet bouncy feel on each chord and humming. It had to me a neat singsong almost doo wop feel to it. Then in a moment of pure craziness I held the C chord (1) transitioning to a totally different choppy two count, quick F (4) then D7 (2) and it was so fun sounding.

The lyrics to the chorus were right there- the melody seemed to have an “I told you so” sort of sound and it was right there. I always have said and am still saying if a guy dumped me it would be his loss and I wouldn’t want him if he didn’t want me (easier to say then put into practice I must admit).

What ended up being the second line was the first verse written. It was inspired by true events in a roundabout way. The day before my brother had met this girl at a dance and was telling us all about how great she was and I was giving him a hard time about how could he tell by only spending a few minutes with her? His reply was “Well she was smiling and laughing at everything I was saying while we were dancing!” and I teased back, “Well yes but she was probably doing that with everyone she danced with.” And that stuck with me. (Footnote: this girl is one I am happy to say ended up being a good friend of mine and the family and she would never do anything of the sort, yet it makes a great verse in the song.)

The rest of the song is really what I would like to say to someone who ditched me for another woman. You will probably regret it. *laughs!*

In studio the band and I were kicking ideas back and forth for the ‘feel’ of the song. Mike Baker (the guitar player) suggested a western swing feel, while Terry Duncan mentioned a more rock and roll feel. I said lets try both. We tried the swing feel first, yet on the chorus with no suggestions from anyone, everyone just switched to the more rock and roll driving beat. It was MAGIC. *smile* and we cut it on the second play through.

Behind the song- The River - April 22, 2008

My family and I had just flown into Kauai Hawaii from Memphis, Tennessee. Everyone else wanted to go down to a small café for dinner but I decided to stay home. I brought my guitar out of its case and checked it over, retightened the strings and tuned it up. (It is better when flying to loosen the strings to help prevent undue stress on the guitar.)

I was happy to be in Hawaii (how could you not) but I started strumming slowly on the guitar and humming a bluesy type melody. I liked what I had to I decided to make it even more bluesy- see what would happen and started talking the words. Blues lead right back to Memphis which lead to the Mississippi river and I imagined the heroine of the story standing by the river broken hearted- watching the water flowing slowly by- needing someone to talk too. (Try standing by a river watching the water for some time and I dare you not to find yourself in a reflective mood. *smile*) and it just built from there.

For all the heartache and parallels to the river and a sense of hopelessness I knew the song shouldn’t end as a downer because deep within the muddy waters an underlying strength. Water that started as just a raindrop turns into a small stream up in the mountains and with time turns into one of the most powerful forces you can find, only to reach the ocean evaporate and start all over again- that is to me amazing.

I really like this song, and it turned out rather deeper then I had thought it ever would. This is one song I love, love doing live, just me and my guitar.

Behind the song- Honky Tonk Love - April 14, 2008

I was sitting upstairs in my room one night playing guitar and thinking about performing at writers nights. Usually at a writers night you sign up and get to play 2 or 3 songs that you have written or co-written. So I was strumming away thinking about what songs I would play when I got a chance to perform at one when it dawned on me I didn’t have a real upbeat county two-stepping song.

So I capo’ed up my guitar to 4 and started playing and chords in the key of E really fast. And the first two lines of the song came to me.

It ‘clicked’! so I was humming out the rest of the melody thinking about trouble makers- who lead to honky-tonks which leads to dancing and western swing which leads to two-stepping and then along came the chorus.

I liked the chorus so much I went back to the first verse and would sing the first two lines, mumble the next part (I had an idea of the melody but the words were sketchy) get to the chorus and rock it out. I did that several times and then imagined a smoking instrumental break in which the whole band would showcase their amazing skills and after all that then it just naturally led itself into the bridge.

So here I was with a half of a verse, a phantom band, a full chorus and bridge that led to a end of a verse I hadn’t written yet- but I had the melody and a rough idea where I wanted it to go. I knew it was good and fun, and I really liked what I had but I was stuck. So I did what any good songwriter should do. I scribbled down the lyrics I had and went to bed. Well maybe not everyone should do that but that was what I did and the next morning it clicked again and I took about an hour to clean up the rest of it up once I deciphered what I had written down the night before. *smile*

Another interesting note when I went into studio to record the song I know it was very a very short song. (Around 90 seconds) so we ended up adding a longer instrumental break and another repeat of the chorus.
